Overview
A landscape without equal
Lake Natron is a remote alkaline lake located in northern Tanzania near the border with Kenya, within the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley. The lake is approximately 57 km long and varies greatly in size depending on seasonal rainfall and evaporation. Its highly alkaline waters, caused by volcanic minerals flowing from surrounding landscapes, create a unique ecosystem that supports one of East Africa's most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos. Dominated by the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, the 'Mountain of God' of the Maasai people, the region offers some of Tanzania's most dramatic scenery, including salt flats, volcanic terrain, waterfalls, and ancient cultural landscapes.
