Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, exceptional Big Five wildlife viewing, and the unique coexistence of wildlife and Maasai communities.

Overview

A landscape without equal

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is one of Africa's most extraordinary protected landscapes, covering approximately 8,292 km² (3,202 sq mi) in northern Tanzania. Established in 1959 and designated both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, the conservation area protects diverse ecosystems ranging from montane forests and highland plains to volcanic craters and archaeological treasures. Its centerpiece is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera, measuring about 260 km² with walls rising over 600 meters. The crater supports one of Africa's highest densities of wildlife, including the endangered black rhinoceros, while the wider conservation area is also home to the Maasai people, who continue their traditional pastoral lifestyle alongside wildlife conservation.
