Lake Eyasi

A remote soda lake in the Great Rift Valley offering authentic cultural encounters with the Hadzabe and Datoga communities.

Overview

A landscape without equal

Lake Eyasi is a seasonal alkaline lake located southwest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania, forming part of the Great Rift Valley ecosystem. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes, including the Eyasi escarpment and distant volcanic highlands, the lake provides a unique cultural and natural experience away from Tanzania's busiest safari routes. Unlike traditional wildlife parks, Lake Eyasi is best known for its indigenous communities, particularly the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers, one of Africa's last remaining hunter-gatherer societies, and the Datoga pastoralist and blacksmith communities. Visitors can experience traditional hunting techniques, learn about ancient lifestyles, explore local villages, and enjoy birdlife along the lake shores. The area is often combined with visits to the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, or Tarangire National Park.

Lake Eyasi provides some of Tanzania's most authentic cultural photography opportunities. Capture sunrise reflections across the alkaline lake, flamingos and waterbirds along the shoreline, the dramatic Rift Valley landscape, Hadzabe hunters during traditional activities, Datoga artisans at work, and golden sunsets over the surrounding escarpments. The area's remote atmosphere creates powerful images of traditional life and untouched wilderness.
