Overview

A landscape without equal

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain, rising to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, and the world's tallest free-standing mountain. Located in northern Tanzania near the town of Moshi, the mountain is a dormant stratovolcano consisting of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kilimanjaro National Park, established in 1973 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, protects the mountain's unique ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforest and heathland to alpine desert and Arctic-like glaciers near the summit. Unlike technical mountain climbs, Kilimanjaro can be climbed by experienced trekkers without specialized mountaineering equipment, although proper acclimatization, professional guides, and careful preparation are essential. The mountain attracts thousands of climbers each year from around the world seeking to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Best Time to Visit
The best climbing seasons are January–March and June–October when conditions are generally drier and visibility is better. December–February is also popular for warmer summit conditions, while June–October offers excellent trekking weather with clearer mountain views.
Photography
Mount Kilimanjaro offers some of Africa's most dramatic mountain photography opportunities. Capture sunrise views from Uhuru Peak, glaciers and ice fields near the summit, volcanic landscapes around Kibo crater, cloud formations above the African plains, lush rainforest trails, and spectacular panoramas stretching across Tanzania and Kenya.
